Bad news for Yahoo... the Internet Search giant announced that quarterly earnings were down 64 percent and that they would be forced to lay off 1,500 employees. Blame for Yahoo's declining revenue was pinned on their online advertising business, which has been hurt by the stumbling economy.
Even worse news for Yahoo... their main competitor, Google, is launching their much hyped mobile platform with the release of T-Mobile's G1 phone this week. Google also made Android's code available to allow developers to add to the codebase and create Apps. With the inclusion of Google's open source Android on the phone, industry analysts are looking to see if the G-1 can compete with Apple's popular iPhone.
But just how popular is the iPhone? How about popular enough to help lift Apple's profits to a 26 percent increase, despite the fact that the American economy is on the verge of full blown recession. Apple's superstar CEO Steve Jobs said that after 3 months in release, the updated 3G iPhone has moved Apple into the number 3 position of all phone suppliers by revenue, passing Research in Motion's Blackberry.
